The idea is to support the land back movement across the tribes. April 29th 1868 the U.S. Government signed the Treaty of Ft. Laramie setting aside the Black Hills for the Sioux Nation. Shortly after Gen. Custer led an expedition into the Black Hills accompanied by miners in search of gold. By 1877 the land was confiscated. To the Sioux and surrounding tribes the area was known to be sacred grounds used to pray, gather food and materials, and medicine. In 1927 the construction of Mt. Rushmore began. Many tribes still see this monument as an insult, currently there is a settlement with an offering of 1.6B. The nation has been firm in the belief that the land is more important than any dollar amount.
